Simmons' Big Day Lifts Pride to Sweep of NC Wesleyan

Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro Softball team (13-7, 2-0) swept NC Wesleyan (10-10, 0-2) in the first USA South Conference series of the year on Friday. Makyiah Simmons was a huge part of the day, as she hit two home runs and had a great diving catch in right field to help the Pride earn the two victories.

Game One:

Lauren Engel started in the circle for Greensboro and threw her fifth shutout of the season to lead the Pride to a 9-0 win. This ties her for the Division III lead in shutouts this season. Engel gave up just five hits on the day and struck out three batters to improve to 8-3 on the season.

At the plate, Makyiah Simmons hit a grand slam in the 5th inning to put Greensboro ahead 7-0. Madison Dillner then doubled to score two more runs to win the game in five innings.

Alexis Sox, who came into the day tied for the NCAA Division III lead in doubles with 14, went 2-2 with a walk. Jillian Vitamanti also went 2-2 with a run scored.

Game Two:

It was Makyiah Simmons who came up clutch again in game two. In a low scoring contest, Greensboro found themselves down 2-1 in the seventh inning when Simmons rocketed one over the left field fence to tie the game 2-2. The Pride would later walk off the Bishops when Anna Frazier drove home Madison Dillner in the eighth inning to win 3-2.

Frazier also got the start in the circle and pitched fantastic. She went five innings, giving up zero hits and walking three batters. She gave up one unearned run. Lauren Engel came out of the bullpen to get the win. She pitched the final three frames and gave up one run. Her record is now 9-3.
