Box Score GREENSBORO, NC- The Greensboro Pride women's basketball team struggled through an 87-28 loss Wednesday night against Guilford College. The 24th renewal of this cross-town rivalry in women's hoops was of little contest, as the Quakers thoroughly dominated the first quarter, jumping out to a 33-2 advantage at the end of the game's first ten minutes.
Greensboro was unable to make a bucket from the floor in the first quarter, shooting 0-9 with their only points coming on a pair of
Nataya Atwater free throws. Guilford continued their dominance in the second quarter, taking a daunting 56-11 lead into halftime. Five Quakers would end the game in double figures, led by double-doubles from Skyler Furr (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Carleigh Perry (10 points, 10 rebounds).
The Pride defense continued to play aggressive in the second half, however, and with the Quakers (5-0) eyeing their second 100-point performance of the season, the pride dug in their heels, keeping Guilford scoreless in the first five minutes of the final quarter and holding them to just eight points to close out the game. Nonetheless, the win was Guilford's third straight in the rivalry, building their overall series record to 15-9 over Greensboro.
For the Pride, Atwater and
Azuria Barrino led the way with 8 points apiece. Barrino also contributed 5 rebounds, while both
Meah Brooks (5Â points, nine rebounds) and
Nakiyah Kelly (eight rebounds) held their own on the boards.
The Pride (2-2) travel to Pfeiffer on Saturday for their first USA South contest of the year, before returning home for a non-conference tilt Tuesday against Christopher Newport ahead of Thanksgiving break.
