Second Half Comeback Falls Short as Men's Basketball Falls to Averett 55-54

Box Score Danville, VA - Greensboro College's Men's Basketball team competed tonight on the road in Virginia against the Averett University Cougars. This was the second of two road games for the Pride to open the season. The Pride were looking for some revenge in this game, as last season's match-up resulted in Averett coming from behind to get the victory.

The first half would start out as a defensive battle, as it took over 2 minutes for the first point to be scored. The Cougars would score the first 8 points of the game before Javion Majette hit a jump shot to put the Pride on the board. Buckets would not come easy for the Pride in the first 10 minutes, as their shots just would not fall. Despite the Pride getting some good looks from the floor, they saw themselves down 14-5 with 9:36 remaining in half number one.

Defensively the Pride played a solid first half. Multiple players earned steals and blocked shots as they kept the Cougars from running away early in the contest. Greensboro would earn their way to the free throw line with some tough baskets and cut the lead to 10 points with 1 minute to go in the half. The Pride would end the first half down 28-17, but the defense was building momentum.

To open the second half, Greensboro would begin a comeback. Following an early three-pointer by the Cougars, the Pride would lock Averett's offense down and begin to claw their way back into the contest. The Pride outscored the Cougars by 10 points over the first 8 minutes of the second half. Matthew Brown, Javion Majette, and Grant Thompson would all dominate as Greensboro would storm back to tie the game at 36 with 10:28 to go in the game. The Cougars would respond to the Greensboro comeback and take the lead back 47-40 with 6:30 remaining.

With 3 minutes to go in the game Greensboro trailed by 5 points, as the comeback effort was still alive. After both teams traded buckets, Drew Irby made a move to get by his defender and score to make it a one possession game. Averett led 53-50 with under a minute to go and soon after were able to push the game back to a 5 point lead. Drew Irby would then quickly go coast to coast to pull the Pride back within a basket.

After a huge steal on the inbound with 22.8 left in the game, Greensboro would attempt to tie the game. Tim Boulware would be fouled, which sent him to the free throw line. Boulware hit both free throws to make the score 55-54. Averett would be able to cleanly inbound the ball and run out the clock despite the Pride's best efforts to steal the ball away. The Pride put up 37 points in the second half, but they fell just short of completing the comeback as the Cougars came out victorious 55-54.

For Greensboro, Grant Thompson scored a career high 19 points and the Pride out-rebounded the Cougars by 15. Javion Majette scored 12 points, while Tim Boulware chipped in with 8 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.

Greensboro will look to take the second half momentum from tonight into their home opener against Randolph College this Saturday. The Pride's home opener is set to tip-off at 4:00 PM inside Hanes Gymnasium.
