Women's Basketball Falls to Centre College in Season Opener

Box Score Decatur, GA - The Greensboro Women's Basketball team began its 2023-2024 season Friday evening as they took on Centre College. The Pride would fall to the Colonels 56-39 despite a team high 12 points from Azuria Barrino.

Greensboro would get out to a 12-8 lead after a first quarter that saw Nataya Atwater score all 5 of her points on the night. Atwater started the game with a three-pointer and then added a layup later in the quarter.

In the second quarter, Barrino would score 6 of her 12 points on the night. The Pride held a one point lead late in the second quarter when Centre College's Anna Thomas tied the game 24-24 on a free throw with 17 seconds left in the first half. The score would remain 24-24 as the teams went into the halftime break.

To begin the third quarter, Barrino quickly gave Greensboro the lead back off a fastbreak jump shot. Kensie Harris then hit a layup to give the Pride a four point lead early in the second half. The lead would get to as high as 7 points after Taya Phelps hit two free throws to put Greensboro ahead 36-29 with just over four minutes left in the third quarter.

At the end of the third quarter, Centre went on a 8-0 run to take a 37-36 lead. The Colonels would take this momentum into the fourth quarter and pull away from Greensboro to secure the win. Centre would outscore the Pride 19-3 in the fourth quarter, as Tamara Hooker and Samya Williams combined to score the only 3 points in the final quarter for Greensboro.

Samiah Mitchell and Kensie Harris each finished the game with 7 points, while Harris came down with 12 rebounds and blocked 2 shots. Greensboro will hit the court again tomorrow as they take on Spalding Unversity (KY.) in their second game of the Agnes Scott Classic. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
