Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong 4th Quarter propels Greensboro to 65-49 win over Meredith College

Raleigh, NC - After going 9-2 in the first half of the season, the Greensboro College Women's Basketball team opened the season on the road at USA South foe Meredith College.  The goal today was to not only earn their 10th win of the season but to stay undefeated in conference play.  The Pride would achieve both of those goals this afternoon defeating the Avenging Angels by a final score of 65-49.

Meredith jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, as the first quarter began.  The advantage would eventually increase to 6-0 until Sophomore Lauren Livingston (Greenwood, SC) put Greensboro on the board with two free throws.  The Avenging Angles continued to keep the lead but Senior Karli Mason (Monroe, NC) drained a three-pointer to pull the Pride to within two points, 11-9.  Greensboro would take their first lead of the game after two free throws by Senior Ta'Keria Legette (Latta, SC), and that was followed by another Mason three-pointer, to close out the quarter with the lead, 16-13.

Mason would hit her third three-pointer of the game, to start the second quarter, and on the next possession she earned the assist by finding Senior Aliyah Whiteside (Spindale, NC) for a fast break layup.  Two consecutive layups from Sophomore Audrey Jennings (Elkin, NC) pushed the lead to double-digits, 25-13, with 7:48 left in the half.  Meredith was able to trim the advantage to five points, however layups from Sophomore Azuria Barrino (Charlotte, NC) and Whiteside increased it back to nine points, and after one more Avenging Angels basket, the Pride would go into the locker room ahead 31-24.

Meredith struck first in the third quarter, but a Legette three-pointer gave Greensboro another double-digit lead, 36-26.  As they did in the first half, the Avenging Angels went on a small run to close the gap to five points.  Three minutes later, the Pride lead was only two points, but a Barrino jump shot stopped the run to put Greensboro back ahead 38-34.  After getting the ball back, Jennings was fouled on a three-point attempt and she was able to convert all three free throws to increase the advantage to seven points and it would remain that as the quarter came to an end, 45-38.

The fourth quarter began with two layups and a three-pointer by Legette and that was followed by a layup from Junior Quadijah Moore (Greenwood, SC), giving the Pride their largest lead of the game, 54-40.  Baskets from Legette, Whiteside and Moore put Greensboro ahead by 21 points and a strong defense was able to prevent Meredith from starting another run.  As the buzzer sounded, Greensboro would come away with it's 10th win of the season defeating the Avenging Angels, 65-49.

Legette led the Pride with 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Moore finished with 12 points, followed by Jennings who had 11 points.  In addition, Sophomore Aijah Palmore (Greensboro, NC) pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.  Greensboro will be back in action this Saturday as they welcome Salem College to Hanes Gymnasium.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00pm.
