Women's Soccer Battles To A Draw Against Ferrum

Box Score Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Women's Soccer team continued their long home stand as they battled Ferrum College under the lights at Pride Field on Wednesday night.

Once the final seconds ticked off the clock, both teams would have to settle for a 1-1 draw which would leave both still looking for the first outright win of the season.

The first half would find an energetic Pride team dominating the action as they would register 10 shots on goals compared to a single shot on goal by the Panthers. The relentless effort would finally pay off as sophomore Maci Hulver would resort to some fancy footwork to find the back of the net at the 27:19 mark to give the Pride their first lead of the season. The half would conclude with the Pride holding the slim one goal margin.

The second half would begin with Ferrum equaling the Pride's energy and standing toe-to-toe with Head Coach Mike Johnston's club as they searched for the equalizer. Pride Freshman goalie Sofia Pagnamenta continued her stellar play in goal as the Panthers begin to apply pressure around the goal mouth. However, at the 80:50 mark of the second half, Ferrum's Sydney Miller would make a game changing play as she tied the score at 1-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game. Both teams would trade scoring chances the next several minutes, but the last thirty seconds would be wild and woolly. A late corner kick for the Pride would result in a barrage of shots that were near misses, only to hear the final buzzer sound to end the contest in a 1-1 draw.

Mike Johnston, Greensboro's Head Coach, had these post game thoughts as he lamented on what could have been: " I loved our energy in the first half. We controlled most of the play and having Hannah McCarthy back in the lineup from illness was a huge help. We also moved Mallory Carter in the middle after an injury and she also helped us immensely. The beginning of the second half was not our best but Sofia continues making plays in goal for us. Unfortunately, we gave up a goal to tie, but I was proud of our girls as they attacked so relentlessly the final minute and were just denied. Soccer is a cruel game and we certainly had our chances, we will use this as a tool to continually improve."

The Pride will continue to enjoy the home field advantage as they will return to Pride Field on Friday, September 9th for a 4:00PM start when they play Bob Jones University.
