Box Score 2 Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Volleyball team, coming off a huge home victory against Averett University earlier in the week, would travel to Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon to take on a pair of highly respected volleyball squads from the ODAC. These games would again be a measuring stick for Head Coach
Kevin Troup's young team as they tune-up for impending conference play.
Match 1 would find the Pride playing Shenandoah University for the first time since 2015. Unfortunately for the Pride, they could not put their game together in the opener and fell in 3 sets by the scores of 25-18, 25-18, and 25-21.
Noticeable performances by
Jaylyn Templeton (19 Assists/13 Digs),
Lauren Mantel (13 Digs),
Abey Hancock (8 Kills), and
Kelci Brooks (4 Kills/12 Digs) highlighted the sluggish performance in Match 1.
The afternoon finale would feature a more spirited performance as the Pride would take on the home standing Eagles of Bridgewater, looking for the equalizer for their day's work. Their effort was obvious as they took the Eagles to the brink before succumbing in a five-set thriller. The Pride would win sets 2 and 4 by scores 25-18, and 25-22. However, the Eagles would win sets 1 and 3 by scores of 25-21 and 25-18 so the match would be dead even moving into the final set. Set 5 would be tight early as the Pride would claw their way to an 8-7 lead against the Eagles. However, an 8 to 3 run by the Eagles to end the game would be the dagger for the Pride as they would drop the finale by a set score of 15-11.
Noticeable players in this match included the continued stellar play of
Abey Hancock (14 Kills, 11 Assists), McKenzie Norris (27 Assists), and
Lauren Mantel (7 Assists/22 Digs).
Head Coach
Kevin Troup had these thoughts on the performance: "We faced a couple of very good teams from the ODAC. In our first match we simply did not show up. But I give a lot of credit to Shenandoah and how they played. They stuck to their game plan and executed well. They are scrappy and have some big hitters. In the second match, we were able to get into groove and played well. Bridgewater runs a quick tempo offense, and we could not stop them at times. We must get better with conference play starting this week."
The Greensboro Pride Volleyball team (5-6) will travel to Winston-Salem on Wednesday, September 21st, to play Salem College at 7:00PM.
