Softball Suffers Heartbreak to Lions, Monarchs

DEMOREST, GA--Greensboro faced the top-seeded Lions from Piedmont in the second round of the USA South Conference Tournament on Friday, falling 4-1.  Greensboro fell behind 2-0 in the 1st after Emma McBrayer's RBI-single for Piedmont.

Cheyanne Cox responded by shutting down the Lions' offense the next two innings, but was out-dueled by Piedmont's pitcher,Martina Maloch, who pitched a complete game and allowed just the one run.

MKenzie Davis cut the Lions lead to 2-1 in the 4th with a RBI-single to bring Kassie Simmons around to score.  The Lions would answer with two more runs, including scoring on a wild pitch in the 5th to go up 4-1, which ended as the final score.

In the second game of the afternoon, Greensboro faced off with the Monarchs of Methodist.  Kassie Simmons went the distance for the Pride, pitching 8.2 innings before Methodist was able to score the winning win in walkoff fashion from a sacrifice fly to bring in Madison Sanchez.  Sanchez led off the 9th with a single, then advanced to 2nd on a Pride fielding error.  She was moved over to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt before scoring the winning run on the sacrifice flyout.

The Pride was able to get seven hits for the game, including a 2-4 effort from Madison Dillner, but GC could not get a run across home plate.

The pair of losses ends the tournament run for the Pride, who will look to improve this offseason and come back ready to battle in the USA South next spring.
