Softball Falls in Pitching Duels to Roanoke

ROANOKE, VA--Greensboro's Cheyanne Cox went six strong innings in a complete game effort for the Pride in game one of a double header against Roanoke College on Thursday afternoon (March 17th).  She surrendered just two runs on two hits, while striking out eight Roanoke batters, but Greensboro could not generate enough offensively, falling 2-1.

Greensboro was able to muster just three hits against Roanoke pitcher, Jada Karnes.  Karnes also threw a complete game and allowed just one run.  Greensboro's Ivy Ray scored on a Maroons' fielding error in the 2nd inning, which gave the Pride a 1-0 lead.

Roanoke's Shanan Hester hit a 2-RBI double to left center in the bottom of the 6th that ultimately proved the difference in the game.

In game two, Kassie Simmons took the mound for Greensboro.  She pitched another gem for the Pride, going all six innings, and allowing just two earned runs.  Simmons led the Pride offensively as well, going 2 for 3 with a sacrifice fly in the 5th inning that got Greensboro back to within striking distance at 3-2 in the 5th. Roanoke would hold onto the lead, and win with the final score of 3-2.

Katie Allison's liner down the right field line in the 4th inning brought in Ivy Ray for the other Pride run.

Despite the pair of losses, Greensboro sits at 9-3 on the year, and looks to get back on track this Saturday as they host Bridgewater College for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm at Latham Park.
