Greensboro, NC – On Thursday night the Greensboro College Women's Basketball team hosted ODAC member Ferrum College for an out of conference match-up in Hanes Gymnasium. The two schools have met 26 times over the years, with the series tied 13-13. However, the Pride had won the last four previous meetings and were looking to get number 5 on the cold and rainy night. They would hold the lead from start to finish and come away with their 7th win of the season, 76-51.
Greensboro established the early momentum in the first quarter as Sophomore Lauren Livingston (Greenwood, SC) and Senior Ta'Keria Legette (Latta, SC) hit back-to-back three-pointers to take the early lead, 6-0. Senior Karli Mason (Monroe, NC) made a three-pointer of her own and at the 6:52 mark, the Pride held a seven-point advantage. The lead would grow to eleven points after another Legette three-pointer and after Livingston converted a free throw, Greensboro would end the quarter leading 21-11.
Sophomore Audrey Jennings (Elkin, NC) kept the scoring going, as the second quarter began, and that was followed up by two straight layups from Junior Quadijah Moore (Greenwood, SC). Another Mason three-pointer pushed the advantage to 17 points and two possessions later she would put the Pride up by 20 points, with her third three-pointer of the game. The lead would grow to 25 points and that is how the half ended, with Greensboro leading, 45-20.
As the third quarter began, Legette hit a short jumper and a few minutes later drained a three-pointer from the top of the key. Senior Aliyah Whiteside (Spindale, NC), who was returning from an injury, hit her own three-pointer, off an assist from Legette, to push the advantage to 57-26. With 2:16 remaining in the quarter, a driving layup by Jennings gave the Pride a 41-point lead. The Panthers cut into that lead, but the quarter would end with Greensboro out in front, 67-32.
The fourth quarter saw Ferrum step up the defensive pressure, which allowed them to force a few turnovers. Those turnovers turned into points, but Senior Egypt Alexander (Salisbury, NC) came off the bench and put the Pride back in the scoring column with a shot under the basket. Sophomore Azuria Barrrino (Charlotte, NC) and Sophomore Tamera Hooker (Fayetteville, NC) also came off the bench to contribute with points and as the buzzer sounded, Greensboro would come away with the win by a final score of 76-51.
Mason and Legette led the Pride with 13 points each, while Legette had 5 steals and Mason finished with 3 steals. Legette was also perfect from behind the three-point line going 3-3. Jennings and Livingston both had solid games, finishing the night with 11 points apiece. Greensboro will now head to warmer weather as they travel to Puerto Rico for games on Sunday and Monday.
