Box Score Fayetteville, NC – After Tuesday's upset win in the first round of the USA South Tournament, the Greensboro College Women's Soccer team was looking to do it again, as they traveled south to Fayetteville to face top seeded Methodist University. Coach
Mike Johnston and his team knew they would have to put in a complete effort in order for the Pride to stay alive.
As the first half got underway, both teams were able to move the ball up and down the field, but not create many scoring opportunities. The Greensboro defense stood strong and midway through the half, they cleared out a Monarch ball, allowing the offense to take control. As a result, Senior
Haley Russell (Suffolk, VA) fired a shot into the high left side of the goal (19:13), giving the Pride an early 1-0 lead. Methodist would begin to put more pressure on the Greensboro defense, but Freshman Goalkeeper
Sofia Pagnamenta (Woodbury, CT) would keep the ball in front of the net, allowing the Pride to go into the half with the advantage.
For a majority of the second half, Greensboro had to withstand numerous shot opportunities from Methodist and they were able to do that until the Monarchs finally converted a shot attempt (72:15) to tie the game at 1-1. Methodist had one last scoring chance in regulation, but Pagnamenta punched the ball out for her 10
th save of the game, to force the game into overtime. The two teams ended the first overtime scoreless, however, with only 17 seconds remaining in the second overtime, the Monarchs converted a corner kick into the game winning goal to end the game.
With the 2-1 defeat, the Pride finishes their season with an overall record of 6-9-4, but not after a great run in the postseason tournament. The Pride will lose four Seniors from this year's team, but Coach Johnston has a solid foundation that he will build from in the offseason and next year.
