Greensboro, NC – On Saturday afternoon, the Greensboro College Football program honored its nine Seniors as they were set to play their final game in a Pride uniform. These young men and their families have been a tremendous part of Greensboro College and have helped pave the way for the future of the program. Even though it was a special day, there was still a task at hand as the Pride welcomed in USA South Conference foe North Carolina Wesleyan, for the final regular season game of the year.
The Fighting Bishops would get on the scoreboard first with a 4-yard run at the 9:37 mark of the first quarter. They made it back-to-back scores, finding the end zone, once again, to start the second quarter and take a two score lead, 14-0. The Greensboro defense would settle down and stop any other scoring opportunities for NC Wesleyan, which allowed the Pride offense to get to work. With only 3:30 remaining in the half, Senior QB
David Loughry II (Indian Land, SC) engineered a 12 play 91-yard drive, which culminated in a 2-yard touchdown pass to Junior WR
De'Shaun Wallace (Rockingham, NC), to go into the locker room trailing by only one score, 14-7.
As the second half began, the Fighting Bishops would receive the ball and move down the filed into scoring position. Greensboro's defensive make a number of stops but NC Wesleyan was eventually able to push it through, increasing their advantage to 21-7. However, the Pride offense would have a quick answer on the next series, as it only took them a minute and 25 seconds to pull within a score when Junior RB
Rodney Scott Jr. (Jamestown, NC) scampered in for a 16-yard touchdown run. The Greensboro fans could since the momentum as the defense shut down the Fighting Bishops, once again giving their offense a chance to tie the game. Unfortunately, after marching down the field in the fourth quarter, NC Wesleyan picked off a Loughry pass in the end zone and ran it back 100-yards for the score. On the next series, the Fighting Bishops would do it again, picking off another pass for a touchdown and suddenly their lead was 35-14 and that would be the score as the horn blew to end the game.
In his final game in a Pride uniform, Loughry finished the day 25-42 for 327 yards, 1 TD and 3 INT's, with a long pass of 64 yards. Fellow Senior
Cale Matthews (Four Oaks, NC) was the recipients of that 64-yard pass and he finished the game catching 5 balls for 119 yards. In addition, Wallace hauled in 7 balls for a total of 78 yards and a touchdown. Scott had a positive day running the ball, finishing the game with 78 yards on 11 carries. On the defensive side, conference tackling leader Sophomore LB
Max Steele (Julian, NC) led his team with 13 total tackles.
While the outcome was not the way Coach Card and his team wanted to end the season, they are forever grateful for the commitment their nine Seniors put in during their time on College Hill. There is a foundation to be built upon and that will start in the off-season.
