Women's Soccer Scores Late To Advance In USA South Tournament

Box Score Raleigh, NC – Despite being on the road and enduring a last minute game time change, the Greensboro College Women's Soccer team were looking to keep their season alive as they faced William Peace in the first round of the USA South Tournament at Sahlen's Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.  The two teams previously met in early October with the Pride coming away with a hard fought 1-0 victory.

In the first half, both teams were able to create a few scoring opportunities, but neither could capitalize for an early lead.   Defensively, Greensboro turned away two Pacer corner kicks and continued to dominate on that side of the ball for the remaining eight minutes of the half, keeping the game scoreless.  Most of the second half would be similar to the first, until Sophomore Mallory Carter found Senior Taylor Kontoulas , who pushed the ball passed the goalkeeper at the 81:35 mark, giving the Pride the 1-0 lead.  After the goal, the defense would, once again, tighten up and, along with Freshman Goalkeeper, Sofia Pagnamenta, shut down any opportunity William Peace would have to tie the game.  As the clock hit zero, Greensboro would come away with the win to stay alive and advance to the next round.

"What a gritty win tonight for our group", said Head Coach Mike Johnston.  "I'm super proud of this team and our collective effort tonight. The finish was high quality and the whole buildup with Karissa's free kick to Mallory's service to Taylor's clinical finish was fantastic. To get a win in this environment, on the road vs. a quality opponent in William Peace is very special.  We're excited to advance."

The Pride will travel to Methodist for Thursday's semifinal, but in the meantime, they will enjoy the bus ride back home, knowing that they still have an opportunity to continue their season.  Stay tuned to www.greensborocollegesports.com for updated game information.
