Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Volleyball team would continue their hot streak as they played the Guilford College Quakers on Tuesday night at historic Hanes Gymnasium. In a tale of two teams going in different directions, the Pride would enter the contest as the favorite, as Head Coach
Kevin Troup's squad had won five of their last six matches to put themselves in the discussion as a contender for a USA South Champions crown. Coming off 10 sets of volleyball only 48 hours earlier during a doubleheader sweep would be a test for the young Pride players.
SET 1:
The Quakers, coming into the match with a 2-12 record, had a sluggish start and would trail 5-1 quickly and thoughts floating around the gym was this could end early. But Head Coach Emily Gann's team would prove otherwise, as they would recover by going on a 14 to 4 run to stun the Pride and their faithful in attendance. The Pride would take advantage of three service errors and a kill by
Abey Hancock to pull within a point at 17-16. However, the Quakers would remain resilient and would go on and win the set by a score of 25-22.
SET 2
If anyone felt set 1 was a mirage, received a wake-up call early in set 2. An energetic Quaker team jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead and the usually thunderous Hanes Gym was eerily quiet. But as hard as the Pride were battling, they could not overtake the Quakers and found themselves down 14-11 as the set was beginning to take shape. Staring now at a 20-16 deficit, The Pride would begin to roar for the first time in the match as staring at a two set deficit was not very appealing. Kills by Hancock,
Taylor Cotie, and a trio by
Payton Shiflet would lead the Pride back, but they would still trail 24-23 with the set squarely on the line. However, the last three points would belong to the Pride thanks to a Cotie kill, a Quaker miscue, and a Hancock kill. That three-point spurt was the difference maker as the Pride would come back late to take the set by a score of 26-24 in overtime.
SET 3
Again, the Quakers came out of the gates quickly as their confidence had not waned. A 10-6 Pride deficit would evaporate quickly as they would put together their best run of the evening. The four- point deficit would balloon to a 21-12 Pride lead. The 15- 2 blitz was led by members of "The Power Company" as Shiflet,
Kelci Brooks, and an enthusiastic finish by
Jade Vrobel would punctuate the huge swing in the set. Pair those with a number of unforced errors on the Quakers and you would have the Pride winning the set going away by a score of 25-14 and taking a 2 set to 1 set advantage.
SET 4
The Pride had now played 13 sets of volleyball over the last 50 hours or so. Even though youthful, Coach Troup and his staff certainly wanted to end this match and get his team to the locker room. The Pride ladies played as if they wanted to the same. Jumping out to a quick and comfortable advantage the Pride looked as if they were in cruise control at 16-10. But from that point, the building was alive as the Pride would score the next 8 points to blow the set wide open and send the Quaker faithful toward the exits. Guilford miscues and kills by Shiflet and Vrobel would punctuate the burst as the final of 25-11 would end the set and match.
Greensboro College Head Coach
Kevin Troup had these thoughts on the rivalry win: " It is always a battle when the GC's meet on the court. And this one lived up to the hype. You can throw the records out the window. Guilford is a very good team, but we just made so many unforced errors early on to hurt ourselves. Later in the match our serving game improved and caused Guilford to get out of sync. Then we started making plays defensively which in turn got our offense on track."
The Greensboro College Women's Volleyball team will play next in Buena Vista, VA on Thursday, October 6th, against Southern Virginia University at 5:00PM.
