Pride Baseball Takes Down Mary Baldwin 15-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Alex Morales had five hits and four runs batted in (RBI) in Greensboro College's 15-2 USA South Athletic Conference baseball victory over visiting Mary Baldwin University Tuesday at Ted Leonard Park. Teammate Scott McGuire went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI in the Pride's home finale.

The conference game was called in the eighth inning after Greensboro scored three times to invoke a conference run rule.

The Pride (13-17, 5-10 USA South) matched its season high with 20 hits. Eight of the team's starting field players had hits, including Chase Bryant, who doubled twice among his three knocks and added two RBI. Cameron Peters and Hunter Curtis also had two hits for Greensboro.

Greensboro wasted little time against Fighting Squirrels' starting pitcher Dylan Weatherly (0-2). McGuire's two-out, two-run single in the first opened the game's scoring. A Mary Baldwin error allowed Brayden King to reach base and set up Hunter Curtis' RBI hit that scored McGuire and gave Greensboro an early 3-0 lead.

Colby Cheatham's RBI single in the third got the Squirrels on the board, but the Pride answered with five two-out runs in the home half of the inning. Morales delivered a two-run single and came around on McGuire's second home of the season one batter later. King tripled to right-center and came around on Curtis' second run-scoring single of the game. Jamar Ellis followed with a hit, which chased Mary Baldwin's Weatherly.

The offensive explosion supported four Pride pitchers who combined to yield 10 hits, but just one earned run. Clayton Slater fanned four through the first four innings before giving way to Alex Trepper (1-0) in the fifth. Macon Pickard had three strikeouts in two innings and Tyler Watson threw a scoreless eighth.

Cheatham, Michael Robertson, Jared Mayhew, and Tucker Hensley each had two hits for Mary Baldwin (1-17, 1-13 USA South).

Coach Avery Booker's Pride opens a three-game set at league-foe Averett University Saturday (5/1) with a noon doubleheader.
