DANVILLE, Va---Averett University's Johnny Kummander scored the game-winning goal 59 seconds into overtime as Greensboro College dropped a Saturday afternoon USA South Athletic Conference (USA South) contest to Averett, 4-3.
Jordy Briceno netted two goals in the contest, with his first coming off a penalty kick in the 28th minute that evened the score after an early Averett goal. Briceno struck with his second free-kick goal of the season in the second half in the 78th minute when he booted a 30-yard free kick into the net for his sixth goal of the season. That goal gave the Pride a one-goal edge late in the second half. A Lluc Pou goal in the 81st minute evened the game for Averett, forcing the overtime period. The goal was Pou's second of the afternoon.
William Curry scored a goal in the 67th minute off of a shot from
Christian Thomas that was saved. Curry beat the goalie off the rebound to the bottom right portion of the net that tied the game for the Pride in the second half.
The Pride out-shot the Cougars, 14-12, and held a 10-5 edge in shots-on-goal. The Pride held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Elmer Martinez (1-1) took the loss for the Pride, making one save in net. Colton Dutchess took the win for Averett, stopping seven shots in net for the Cougars.
The Pride (2-1, 1-1 USA South) return to the pitch next Saturday, traveling to William Peace University for a noon USA South contest.
