LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va.---Former Greensboro College Women's Basketball assistant coach Jennifer King made history today as Head Coach Ron Rivera and the Washington Football Team announced that King will serve as Assistant Running Backs Coach, making her the first African-American female in NFL history to hold a full-time coaching position.
"Coach King is well deserving of the promotion to assistant running backs coach. She came to Washington eager for the opportunity to work as a full-year coaching intern and learn from our staff," said Washington Football head coach Ron Rivera. "She got the chance to experience not only the in-season work that goes into being a full-time coach in this league but also the countless hours that are spent preparing in the offseason as well. She demonstrated all of the qualities that are needed to work full-time on my staff. She is a hard worker, a great communicator and a quality person."
During her nine seasons with the Pride from 2007-2016, King helped lead Greensboro to a 176-70 overall mark, including four USA South Athletic Conference (USA South) regular-season championships and three USA South tournament championships. In addition to their conference accolades, the Pride also made four appearances in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament, including a trip to the sectional round after winning their regional in 2011, with King on the bench.
While at Greensboro College, King was growing her football playing career. She was a seven-time All-American quarterback and wide receiver for the Carolina Phoenix women's tackle football team from 2006-17. In 2018 she played wide receiver and defensive back for the New York Sharks women's tackle football team and captured the 2018 WFA National Championship. King continued her playing career even as her coaching career was beginning to take off, suiting up as wide receiver and safety for the D.C. Divas women's tackle football team in 2019.Â
King became the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Johnson & Wales (N.C.) in 2016 and spent two seasons with the Wildcats, posting a 40-11 record.  Later, she became a coaching intern under Rivera with the Carolina Panthers in 2018 and 2019. In between internships with the Panthers, King was an assistant wide receivers coach for the Arizona Hotshots in the Alliance of American Football (AAF). The Hotshots were 5-3 with King at the helm and led the AAF's Western Conference before the league disbanded.
King then took a role as offensive assistant at Dartmouth College where she helped Dartmouth post a 9-1 overall record and earn an Ivy League Championship. Her offense posted 33.3 points per game and and averaged 382.4 yards per game.
Most recently, King served the Washington Football Team as a full-year intern for Washington's Offense, where she worked with running back J.D. McKissic. Under her leadership, McKissic posted an 80-reception season in Washington's backfield. That mark stands as the second-most receptions by a Washington running back in franchise history. Washington's running backs ran for 1,697 yards and 20 rushing touchdowns with King guiding the backfield.
King played basketball for four years at rival Guilford College, holding many top marks in several statistical categories and adding three seasons on Guilford's softball team. The Reidsville, N.C. native has boasted a playing career where she can officially be called a three-sport athlete.
King looks to aid Washington in their quest to repeat in 2021 as NFC East Division Champions in a year that will mark her fourth season working under Ron Rivera.
