RALEIGH, N.C. – The Greensboro College women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to the Pacers of William Peace University Saturday 70-69.
Greensboro held an 8-6 lead midway through the opening period, but William Peace closed out the final 4:13 on an 11-4 run to take a five-point lead into the second. However, Greensboro quickly opened the first 2:15 of the second period on an 8-2 run to hold a 20-19 lead with 7:16 to play in the half.
During that time, Greensboro would lead by as many as four, but William Peace was able to take a 33-27 lead into the half, following a 14-4 run.
After intermission, William Peace took their largest lead of the game midway through the fourth period, but the Pride went on an 11-3 run to tie the game at 66, following a layup by
Katie Lewis. Following the Lewis layup, William Peace regained a two-point edge with a pair of free-throws before
Destiny Timberlake hit a three-pointer with less than a minute remaining to put the Pride on top 69-68.
However, William Peace scored with seven seconds remaining in the game to jump in front for the final time, despite a last second attempt by the Pride.
Joseph finished with a double double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Lewis and
Diajah Hickson both had 11 points.
With the loss, the Pride earned the No.4-East seed in the USA South Tournament and will face No.5-East seeded Mary Baldwin University in the first round at home Wednesday.
