GREENSBORO, N.C. – With the end of the fall semester coming to an end, Greensboro College wrestlers
Hai Siu and
Alexis Chase are gearing up to battle in the NC Best event Saturday evening, hosted by Gauntlet Wrestling Productions.
The Pay-Per-View event will feature seven high school matches and three college freestyle matches.
"I am extremely excited for these two student-athletes as they get this opportunity to compete once again on such a high level," Head Wrestling Coach
Kevin Birmingham said. "I am also very proud of them for taking this opportunity on short notice and showing everyone just how hard they have been working so far this season."
For Siu and Chase, it has been two different paths to the event as Siu started wrestling at a young age while Chase is just getting started in her wrestling career.
After coming up just short of the NCAA Division III Tournament his freshman season, Siu came back with a lot of will and determination to make the tournament last year. Following his win at the 2020 Southeast Wrestling Conference Championship, Siu came out on fire at the NCAA Regional and won his first two bouts to punch his ticket to the semifinals where he would face off with Averett University's Brandon Woody, which was a rematch of the third-place bout the season before.
This time it was Siu who came out victories and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament in Cedar Rapids, Ia. While on the mat practicing and getting ready for the tournament and his journey towards a National Championship, Siu, along with his coach, got the news that the event had been canceled due to the CoVID-19 pandemic but Siu was still named an All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
Now nine months later, Siu is ranked seventh in the preseason FloWrestling Division III rankings and is set to take the mat against Dawson Bates of Appalachian State University.
"It is really great to get this opportunity to compete once again," Siu stated. "It has been so long since I was able to compete in a match and I get to do it again while competing against a Division I wrestler.
"I have competed against some in the past, but wrestling someone like Dawson will allow me to show just how much I have grown both on and off of the mat."
Chase on the other hand is new to the sport of wrestling as she started wrestling after the sport was announced to be added to the varsity slate at Greensboro College in February. However, Chase has wasted no time getting up to speed.
Now for the first time in her career, Chase will take to the mat on Saturday evening and will square off with Katrina Anderson of Ferrum College.
"In the short amount of time that I have been wrestling, I have learned a lot about the sport and that I can find that dark place and push myself even further," Chase said. "I am excited to challenge myself on such a high level and see what I can do."
