Kevin Birmingham was named Greensboro College’s head wrestling coach in August 2019 after serving as assistant coach for two seasons. Birmingham is now the second head coach in program’s history and was instrumental in starting the Pride’s newest addition to its athletic department, women’s wrestling. Greensboro College is the very first college or university to offer Women’s Wrestling in the state of North Carolina, and in February 2020, Birmingham was named head coach.
In 2021-22 season, Birmingham had all ten wrestlers go to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) national championship, with Josh Wilson being named the highest all-American in GC wrestling history after he made it to the semi finals of the tournament and finished in 6th place.
Birmingham guided All-American Josh Wilson to national success in the 2020-21 season, guiding Wilson to an undefeated record before the NWCA Division III Coaches Association National Wrestling Championships. Wilson placed sixth in the 133-pound weight class at the NWCA National Championship. The Pride's head coach garnered national rankings for three of his wrestlers (Wilson, Hai Siu, and Brandon Williams) in their weight classes at the end of the shortened season.
The Pride's leader also led the first season of competition for Greensboro's women's wrestling program in 2020-21. Birmingham led Ariana Wolkerstorfer and Alexis Chase to the program's first women's wrestling individual victories during the season, competing in two regular-season meets. Birmingham led Wolkerstorfer to four regular-season wins in the freshman's first two collegiate matches.
During his first season as Greensboro College’s head wrestling coach, Coach Birmingham helped elevate the wrestling program to another level. After strong competition throughout the year, the team turned in a solid performance at the NCAA DIII Southeast Regional. At 141 lbs., Hai Siu became the program’s second NCAA Qualifier, where he finished the season ranked 8
th on Intermat Wrestling and
d3wrestle.com. Due to COVID-19, the NCAA Championships were canceled, but Hai Siu was honored as a Third-Team All American by the NWCA.
In 2018, Birmingham was named Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach for the Pride, while also serving as the full-time assistant wrestling coach. In his one year as head women’s lacrosse coach, Birmingham led his team to an overall record of 6-10, going 5-6 in USA South Athletic Conference play. Following the year, Kara Whitson was named to the USA South All-Conference team. In addition, as assistant wrestling coach, Birmingham helped three athletes become Southeast Regional place-winners.
In 2017, Birmingham was named assistant wrestling coach, where he played a significant role in helping the Pride finish with five Southeast Regional place-winners while earning 8
th overall as a team.
Prior to joining the Greensboro College staff, Birmingham served as the Assistant Wrestling Coach at Green Hope High School for one year. During that season, Birmingham helped three wrestlers qualify for the NCHSAA State Championships. As a team, they qualified for the NCHSAA State Dual Championships for the first time in six seasons.
Immediately following college, Birmingham began his coaching career, serving as the Assistant Wrestling Coach at the University of Mount Union for the 2015-2016 season. During his tenure with the Raiders, Birmingham helped three wrestlers place at the Division III Mideast Regional. One wrestler earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships, where he was named All-American after finishing 7
thplace.
A native of Sicklerville, New Jersey, Birmingham wrestled at NCAA Division I Davidson College. A four-year starter at 149 lbs., Birmingham was named Southern Conference Athlete of the Week three times and Southern Conference Athlete of the Month in 2014. Birmingham placed 4
th at the Southern Conference Championships in 2013 and runner-up in 2014. His second place finish earned Birmingham an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Championships. During his 2014 campaign, Birmingham was ranked as high as 14
th in the country, while he compiled 20 victories with 14 pins, which ranked him 4
th in NCAA Division I Most Pins in a season. Birmingham finished his career with 55 victories and 34 pins.
Birmingham currently resides in Graham, North Carolina with his wife, Brittany.
