Pride Football Falls In Season Opener Against Shipbuilders, 23-8

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Greensboro College football team dropped their season opener to the Shipbuilders of Newport News Apprentice Saturday 23-8.

Apprentice took a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter before the Pride got on the board.

Following a Shipbuilders punt, Greensboro got the ball on their own 19-yardline and quickly marched down the field to the end zone. Facing a third down and 5 on their own 24-yardline, David Loughry II connected with Zach Atkinson for a 76-yard touchdown.

On the ensuing extra point, Cale Matthews caught a pass from Wyatt Beasey to give Greensboro an 8-3 lead.

However, Apprentice was able to come back and take a 16-8 lead into halftime before scoring the game's final points in the third quarter.

"We played our best game since coming to Greensboro," Head Coach Greg Crum said. "A couple coverage mistakes led to two touchdowns. Not taking anything away from Apprentice as they played us tough and made the plays when they needed to.

"Our offense is going to be very good but we have to get better each week. Now we will move forward and we are very excited to see our progress next week against Ferrum."

Loughry finished the day with 222 yards through the air while also rushing for 84 yards. Atkinson finished with a team-leading 128 yards receiving.  Jeremiah Speed paced the Pride defense with 10 tackles, including one for loss.

The Pride will return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they host the Panthers of Ferrum College. For more information on Greensboro College football, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
