Pride Women Suffer Last Second Defeat At Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Greensboro College women's basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion to the Cougars of Averett University Saturday 72-70.
 
The Cougars jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the first two minutes of the opening period before going on to take a 24-15 lead into the second.
 
Averett quickly extended their lead to 11 on their first possession of the second period before Greensboro was able to use a 10-3 run to pull within 29-25 with 3:14 showing on the clock.
 
Katie Lewis tallied four points during the run while Nichelle Jeffries, A'Liyah Woods, and Brianna Best combined for six points.
 
Greensboro was not able to maintain their momentum over the remainder of the period as the Cougars took a 39-27 lead into the break.
 
Over the first two minutes of the third period, Greensboro was able to pull within 41-35 following an 8-2 run. This time it was Best leading the way with four points.
 
The Pride continued to battle over the final eight minutes of the period but the Cougars were able to take a 56-49 lead into the final period.
 
In the fourth, Greensboro was able to pull to within two with seven minutes on the clock following another Best basket but Averett extended their lead back out to seven with 4:46 to play.
 
Despite facing the seven-point deficit, Greensboro surged their way back into the game before Jeffries hit a game-tying three pointer with 12 seconds to play.
 
However, Averett was able to convert following a timeout to secure the two-point victory.
 
Woods finished with a team-leading 17 points while Best (11), Jeffries (13), and Lewis (10) also finished in double figures.
