Pride Football Falls In USA South Opener To Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Greensboro College football team dropped their USA South Athletic Conference opener to the Cougars of Averett University Saturday, 54-0.

The Cougars took a 34-0 lead into halftime before kicking the ball off to the Pride to start the second half.

After getting the ball on their own 25-yard line, Greensboro quickly began to move the ball.

Rohan Goldston tallied Greensboro's first first-down of the half after rushing for 15 yards on two plays.

Tyler Bowles then took a lateral from Goldston 10-yard to set Greensboro up with a first down on their own 38-yard line.

Despite being able to move the ball, the Pride's drive stalled and they were forced to punt the ball back to Averett.

The Cougars then went on to score the final 20 points of the game to secure the victory.

Bowles and Louis Briggs III combined for 59 yards rushing on the day. Defensively, Garratt Brannock posted a team-leading 11 tackles, while Kasseem Bagley had 10 tackles.

Greensboro finished the day with 11 tackles for loss with Cornelius Bailey leading the way with five, including one sack.

"Today our guys played with grit," Head Coach Greg Crum said.  "They fought through a tough game and showed the resolve they need to continue to grow as a football team.  Averett is a good ball club.

"We need to keep working on finding ways to get points in the board if we are going to succeed.  We are going back to work Monday and our focus is on NC Wesleyan."

The Pride football team will return to action Saturday when they host the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan at 1 p.m. For more information on Greensboro College football, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
