GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team split a pair of USA South Athletic Conference games with the Monarchs of Methodist University Wednesday at Latham Park.
Greensboro dropped the opening game of the doubleheader, 4-3, before battling back to win game two, 8-0.
"We continue to struggle to put every phase of the game together," Head Coach
Teresa Fister said. "We struggled in the first game, but was able to battle back to split the doubleheader with a big win in the second."
Game One
Jasmine Worthy singled on a bunt to lead off the game before advancing into scoring position with a stolen base.
Later in the inning, Worthy came across the plate to give Greensboro a one-run lead.
The score then remained the same until the Monarchs tied the game at one in the third inning before taking a 3-1 lead with a two-run fifth inning.
However, Greensboro was able to battle back to even the score in the bottom half as
Melissa Garcia and
Cassie Collins tallied RBI singles.
Following the two-run spurt by Greensboro, neither team was able to push the winning run across the plate until the Monarchs scratched a run across in the eighth.
Worth finished with a team-high three hits, while
Hayley Tickle had two hits.
Maddy Wetherholt took the loss in the pitching circle.
Game Two
Cheyanne Cox took control of the game in the first inning, striking out the side before finishing with nine in just six innings.
After Cox struck out the side, Greensboro struck for three runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a two RBI double from Collins before Tickle hit a RBI sacrifice fly.
Greensboro did not look back for the remainder of the game as the scored one run in the second, fifth and sixth innings, while adding two more in the fourth.
Alexis Newman, Garcia, Worthy, and Cox had RBI hits during the run.
Garcia, Collins, Newman and
Kaylee Johnson each had two hits, while Cox was credited with the win and only allowed one hit.
