RALEIGH, N.C.—The Greensboro College women's basketball team defeated the Avenging Angels of Meredith College Sunday, 64-51.
The Pride trailed the Avenging Angels throughout the first period, but were able to come back to take their first lead of the contest at 17-16 before the eight minute mark in the second period.
Shortly after, Meredith regained the lead before going into halftime with a 30-21 lead.
At the start of the third period,
Nichelle Jeffries brought down a defensive rebound and was able to lay up the ball to start a 6-0 run for the Pride.
Katie Lewis then recorded a steal and proceeded to put it in the basket before
Makayla Williams found
Brianna Best down low to cap off the run to pull Greensboro to within three at 30-27 with 8:41 to play in the third period.
After the Pride's run, Meredith began to pull away from Greensboro and established an eight-point advantage, but the Pride fired up a 10-2 run to regain the lead at 45-44.
Sabria Joesph and Jeffries both had four points during the run, while
A'Liyah Woods added two points.
Greensboro was desperately grasping onto a one-point lead at the start of the final period, while continuing to battle hard on both ends of the court.
With Greensboro holding on to the narrow advantage,
Ashley Free recorded a steal to give Greensboro back the possession of the ball, which lead to a basket by Lewis to start up a 14-5 run for the Pride.
As time began to run out, following Greensboro's huge run, the Avenging Angels tried to battle back but it was the Pride who came away victorious.
"We did not play well at all on offense or defense in the first half," Assistant Coach
Johnnie Richardson said. "But we put a lot more pressure on the Angels in the second half and we created a lot of turnovers that gave us extra possessions.
"The girls were able to capitalize on those extra possessions and we came away with the win for Coach Tuggle."
Scoring in double figures was Free (14), Jeffries (13) and Woods (10). Best recorded a team-high eight rebounds, while Free and Williams both recorded a game-high three steals.
The Pride will return home for a 6 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday against USA South foe William Peace University. For more information on Greensboro College women's basketball, continue to follow
