STAUNTON, Va. – The Greensboro College volleyball team split a pair of USA South Athletic Conference matches at Mary Baldwin University Saturday.
The Pride dropped their opening match of the day to the Monarchs of Methodist University, 3-1, before topping the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College, 3-1.
Greensboro dropped a seesaw battle in Set 1 against the Monarchs by a 25-23 mark before falling behind 2-0 after dropping Set 2, 25-11.
After Methodist took the two-set lead, the Pride was able to rebound back to win Set 3 30-28 to send the match into a fourth set.
Greensboro opened up a 6-2 lead in Set 3 before Methodist was able to battle back to take a 19-18 lead.
Shayla Moss tallied one kill and one block during the opening run, while
Breanna Wilton tallied one service ace.
The Monarchs were then able to extend their lead to 20-18 but Greensboro battled back to tie the set at 20 before closing out the set on a 4-1 run.
Danyale Berry fueled the closing run with three kills.
Despite riding the momentum from Set 3, Greensboro was not able to overcome a slow start in Set 4, falling 25-23.
Evan Sherer had a match-high 17 kills, while Berry tallied 11 kills.
Katie Clark led Greensboro with 34 assists and
Emily Horn had 21 digs.
Following their loss to Methodist, Greensboro was able to regroup in its first set against the Bishops to take a 1-0 lead after winning Set 1, 25-18.
Greensboro found themselves leading 6-3 early in the set before N.C. Wesleyan came storming back to take an 8-7 lead.
Greensboro then used a 7-1 run later in the set to pull in front 15-10 and did not look back from that point. Clark started the run with a service ace before recording an assist on Horn's kill to cap off the spurt.
The Bishops were then able to tie the match at one with a 25-22 win in Set 2 but the Pride was able to rebound to win the next two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-16 to secure the four-set victory.
Horn tallied a match-high 20 kills in the victory, while Sherer added another 11 kill performance. Wilton led the team in digs with 28.
"We were lacking confidence early but were able to get it back after falling to Methodist," Head Coach
Kathy Bullock said. "We just did not overcome our adversity early but we were able to get our rhythm back in the second match.
"The girls are still learning and progressing every day. We saw some of the things we have been working on coming to life and it is still early in the conference season."
