FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Greensboro College men's soccer team knocked the Monarchs of Methodist from the conference unbeaten ranks with a 4-2 victory Saturday.
The Monarchs and the Pride played even for the first 39 minutes of play before Greensboro scored the game's first goal.
After the Monarchs committed a foul just outside of the 18-yard box,
Jordy Briceno blasted his free kick in to the upper right corner of the goal to give Greensboro the 1-0. The goal also marked his fourth goal of the season.
Following Briceno's goal, the Pride had a few more opportunities to extend their margin before halftime but was unable to capitalize.
Greensboro then maintained their one-goal advantage for the first five minutes of the second half before expanding their margin to 2-0 when
Darli Mihindou scored off a corner kick from
Gerardo Peraza.
After the Pride established the two-goal lead, Methodist was able to get on the board in the 61
st minute.
However, Greensboro used a counter-attack opportunity two minutes later to regain the two-goal lead after Peraza found the back of the net.
The Pride continued to ride their momentum following the counter-attack goal as they extend their lead in the 69
th minute when Briceno struck for his second goal of the afternoon, off an assist from
Andrew Moebius, to make the score 4-1.
Methodist then got an own goal in the 87
th minute to pull within 4-2 but Greensboro was able to hold off the Monarchs from that point to secure the two-goal victory.
"I am pleased with the guy's performance tonight," Head Coach
Tony Falvino said. "They worked hard and created good chances.
"We still have to grow as a team and manage the game better, Overall it was a good team performance."
Greensboro held a 13-11 advantage in shots, while hold a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.
Caelan Kohut recorded the win in goal for the Pride, while recording three saves.
