MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Evan Sherer recorded a match-high 21 kills as the Greensboro College volleyball team defeated the Scots of Maryville College Friday to open the 2017 Maryville College Invitational, 3-1.
Greensboro opened Set 1 on a 13-0 run before the Scots got on the board. Sherer accounted for three kills during the run, while
Danyale Berry and
Emily Horn combined for five kills.
Following the run, Maryville was able to pull within 10 points late but Greensboro closed out the set with a 25-13 victory to take a 1-0 lead.
The Pride then took a tight Set 2 by a 25-19 mark after
Shayla Moss recorded the final kill to extend the Greensboro lead to 2-0, but Maryville then sent the game into a fourth set after winning Set 3, 25-18.
After the Scots pulled to within one set, Greensboro rallied back midway through Set 4 to take their first lead at 16-15, following a 3-0 run. Berry recorded the lone kill during the spurt, while Maryville committed two errors.
Maryville then established their largest lead of the set at 22-18 before the Pride used a 9-3 run to secure the match with a 27-25 victory.
"It was great to see the ladies dominate and demonstrate the skills we have been working on," Head Coach
Kathy Bullock said. "We are looking forward to continuing our success tomorrow."
Horn joined Sherer in the double-digit kill club with 12, while Moss tallied 9 kills.
Katie Clark passed for a match-high 30 assists and Tori Blecher had a team-leading 26 digs.
The Pride will wrap up the 2017 Maryville College Invitational Saturday with two matches. Greensboro will take on Covenant College at 11 a.m. before closing out the event against the College of Mount St. Joseph at 4 p.m.
