DANVILLE, Va. – The Greensboro College softball team saw their season come to an end Saturday after dropping two games in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament against Averett University.
"We saw a lot of good things this season," Head Coach
Teresa Fister said. "I am proud of our seniors and thank them for their contributions to our program.
"We are looking forward to next season and the strong talent that will return."
Greensboro suffered a 10-5 defeat in Game 1 before falling, 4-3, in Game 2.
The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opening game when
Kaylee Johnson hit a single down the left field line to score
Hayley Rumley.
Averett then tied the game in the third inning before Greensboro regained the lead at 3-1 with a 2 RBI double by
Taylor Little.
The Cougars then scored the game's next nine runs to take a 10-3 lead before Greensboro scored two-unearned runs in the seventh inning.
Mandi Ballard,
Kali Puckett,
Brittainy Rush, and Little had two hits each, while
Melissa Garcia, Rumley,
Cassie Collins, and
Madison Crisco had one hit each.
Maddy Wetherholt pitched the first 5 2/3 innings and was credited with the loss, while
Brittany Nozet pitched 2/3 of an inning.
Averett rode their Game 1 momentum to take a 1-0 lead in the top half of the third inning.
However, Greensboro responded with three runs in the bottom half to take a two-run lead of their own.
Johnson hit a single to center field to score Rumley before Garcia scored on a Collins sacrifice fly.
Following the second run, Johnson came across the plate on a Cougars error.
Averett then tied the game at three with a two-run seventh inning before scoring the deciding run in the eighth inning.
Johnson and Puckett each had a team-high two hits, while Rumley and Ballard had one hit each. Wetherholt was credited with the complete game loss despite recording four strikeouts.
