Baseball Drops Doubleheader Against LaGrange To Close Sesaon

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Greensboro College baseball team closed out their 2017 season with a doubleheader against No.2-ranked LaGrange College Saturday.

LaGrange took the first game of the day by a 12-10 score before winning the nightcap, 11-5.

The Panthers jumped out to a 10-0 lead through seven innings of Game 1.

Greensboro then pulled to within one run with a nine-run eighth inning.

Braedon Jewett and Dallas Ductoe recorded back-to-back bases loaded walks to get the Pride on the board before Hunter Curtis plated Blake Glass and Ductoe with a single to left field.

With the Pride trailing 10-4, Brandon Soden laced a RBI single to center field to pull Greensboro within five runs. The Pride then got two runs on a LaGrange error before Andrew Ray placed a two-out two RBI single to right field to cap off the inning.

However, LaGrange extended their lead to 12-9 in the bottom half of the inning, but Greensboro scored one final time in the ninth inning despite leaving two runners on base.

Ducote and Curtis finished with a team-high three hits, while Brady Dignan and Ray had two hits apiece. Adam Murray was credited with the loss after pitching three innings, while Willis Booth, Lee Sells and Cameron Whitson combined to pitch the final five innings.

LaGrange was able to ride their Game 1 momentum into the nightcap as they established a 4-0 lead going into the fourth inning before Derek Jaar pulled Greensboro to within two runs when he hit a two-run homerun over the left field wall.

After the Panthers extended their lead to 7-2 in the bottom half of the inning, Jimmy Short recorded his third hit of the game to score Zach Neumeister to bring Greensboro back within four runs.

Greensboro then pulled within 7-5 with a two RBI single by Edward Milian in the seventh inning but LaGrange scored the game's final four runs to secure the six-run victory.

Short finished with a team-high three hits, while Ray and Jaar collected two hits. Josh Evans started on the mound for the Pride and was credited with the loss, while Tyler Garam, Hunter Curtis, Drew Paice, and Ray also saw time on the mound.

"It wasn't the outcome we wanted this weekend but I am extremely proud of how we competed against one of the best teams in the country," Head Coach Frank Maldonado said. "I will be forever grateful to the group of seniors for their hard work and positive attitudes. They helped lay the foundation for this program moving forward.

"We will return all but 10 players next season and we look forward to continuing to build off of what we accomplished this season. The sky is the limit for this program."

The Pride finishes the 2017 season with an overall record of 23-20. For more information on Greensboro College baseball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
