ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team split a USA South Athletic Conference doubleheader with North Carolina Wesleyan Sunday to close out the regular season.
The Pride recorded a 4-3 victory to open the day before falling in the second game, 10-4.
Hayley Rumley got the Pride on the board first with a leadoff home run to left field.
The Battling Bishops then evened the score in the third inning before Greensboro regained a one-run lead in the fourth inning when
Kali Puckett came across the plate on a
Brittainy Rush single to right field.
However, Wesleyan knotted the score at two with a solo homerun of their own in the bottom half but Greensboro quickly took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning on a
Kaylee Johnson groundout before scoring their final run of the game in the seventh inning on a
Cassie Collins single through the left side of the infield.
Wesleyan was then able to score one final run in the home half of the inning before
Maddy Wetherholt got Sarah Bowyer to fly out to
Madison Crisco to secure her conference-leading 14
th victory of the season.
Rumley finished the game with a team-high three hits, while Collins,
Mandi Ballard, Puckett and Rush had one hit each.
After winning game 1, Greensboro took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game 2 one a
Melissa Garcia groundout before the Bishops went on to score the next eight runs to take a 8-1 lead into the sixth inning.
Greensboro was able to plate three runs in the inning to pull within 8-4 but could not get any closer.
Rumley and Collins each had two hits in the defeat, while
Kaylee Johnson,
Madison Crisco, Rush, and Puckett combined for four hits.
Hayley Tickle took the loss in the pitching circle, while
Brittany Nozet and Wetherholt also pitched in the contest.
"We have had a great regular season and we are looking forward to competing in the post season," Head Coach
Teresa Fister said. "Our ladies understand that this is a team effort and they continue to work together."
With the doubleheader split, Greensboro finished in a fourth place tie with the Bishops in the USA South East Division but was awarded the No.5-East seed following the tiebreaker procedures.
Greensboro will return to action next weekend in a best of three series with the No.2-East seed Averett Cougars. The winner of the three-game series will advance to the USA South Conference Tournament in LaGrange, Ga., April 13-15.
