Pride Baseball Tops Huntingdon To Pick Up First Conference Victory

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team picked up their first USA South Athletic Conference victory Sunday by defeating Huntingdon College, 9-5.

Brady Dignan gave Greensboro a 1-0 lead in the first inning after plating Brayed King from second base with a single to center field.

The Hawks then took a one-run lead of their own in the top half of the second inning before the Pride answered right back three more runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Scotty McGuire walked for with two outs in the inning before advancing to second base on an Adam Murray single. Hunter Curtis then plated McGuire with a single of his own before Zach Neumeister drew a bases loaded walk to score Murray from third base to reestablish the lead. Dignan, who was the Pride's next batter, was then credited with an RBI after being hit by a pitch for the inning's final run.

However, Huntingdon was able to tie the contest again in the fifth inning before the Pride used a two-run sixth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Neumeister recorded his second RBI of the game on a double to right-center field before coming in to score on a Brandon Soden single.

After Greensboro regained the lead, Huntingdon got one more run in the eighth inning before Greensboro shut the door closed with a three-run inning. Dignan recorded an RBI single in the inning, while Daniel Efird hit a pinch-hit single to left field to score Soden.

The Hawks then threatened with the bases loaded in the ninth inning but Andrew Ray was able to get out of the jam without allowing a run to secure the victory.

"I was extremely pleased with the way our team bounced back today," Head Coach Frank Maldonado. "Even though there is still room for improvement, there is still a lot of baseball to be played.

"We will get back at it this week as we get ready for another conference series next weekend."

Curtis led Greensboro with three hits, while Jimmy Short and Dignan had two hits each. Josh Evans, who pitched the first 4 1/3 innings, started on the mound for Greensboro but did not factor into the decision. Tyler Garam was credited with the win, while Ray pitched the final inning.

The Pride baseball team will return to action at 3 p.m. Tuesday when they take on Penn State Berks in Myrtle Beach, S.C. For more information on Greensboro College baseball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
