GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team picked up their first two USA South Conference victories of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Mary Baldwin University Saturday.
The Pride defeated the Squirrels in Game 1, 10-6, before winning Game 2 in six innings, 10-2.
"I am very happy with our performance today," Head Coach
Teresa Fister said. "It is really good to pick up two victories in our home conference opener on our new field."
Game 1
Mary Baldwin took a two-run lead in the first inning before Greensboro was able to get one run back in the bottom half after
Hayley Rumley came in to score on a double steal.
The Squirrels were then able to get another run in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead.
After neither team was able to score of the next two innings, the Pride pushed four runs across in the fifth inning to jump in front 5-3.
Taylor Little and
Kaylee Johnson each recorded two RBI singles with the bases loaded.
The Pride then scored their final five runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 10-3 before Mary Baldwin struck for the games' final three runs in the seventh inning.
Kali Puckett had a two RBI single to right field, while
Cassie Collins hit a RBI double to left-center field.
Cassie Collins also had a RBI single.
Hayley Tickle recorded two strikeouts in the complete game victory.
Brittainy Rush, Rumley,
Melissa Garcia, Johnson, and Little had two hits each.
Game 2
Greensboro wasted no time in establishing a three-run lead after they plated three runs in the first inning.
Johnson scored the games' first run on a
Mandi Ballard single to right-center field before Collins came in to score on a Mary Baldwin error off the bat of Rush. Ballard then came in to score the final run of the inning on a Puckett triple.
Greensboro then added to their lead with a two-run third inning before the Squirrels scored their lone two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Following the two-run fourth inning for Mary Baldwin, Greensboro scored the final five runs to secure the eight-run victory. Ballard, Johnson, Garcia, and Rumley each had RBI hits.
Maddy Wetherholt tallied three strikeouts in the complete game victory. Ballard's 3-for-3 day at the plate paced the Pride offense, while Jonson, Rumley, and Puckett had two hits each.
