GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team defeated the Monarchs of Methodist University in the final game of a three-game series Saturday, 4-2.
The Pride (14-7, 3-3 USAS) struck first in the bottom of the second inning when
Ryan Campbell laced a double into left center field that scored
Griffen Riley. Campbell would then come around to score after an RBI double by
Daniel Efird.
The Monarchs would answer with a run in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 2-1.
In the home half of the fourth inning, a wild pitch would score
Cameron Peters to give Greensboro a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth inning.
Peters then led off the sixth inning with a single and later scored for the Pride's fourth and final run to give Greensboro a three-run advantage, 4-1.
Methodist would plate one more run in the seventh, but
Christian Kercado would close the door on the Monarchs and pick up his first save of the season.
"We always preach pitch to contact, play good defense, and have timely hitting", Head Coach
Frank Maldonado said following the win. "It always starts on the mound. Willis pitched to contact and located the baseball. It was great to see that he competed.
"We ran into some adversity this weekend and this is why we are truly called a team. I am very proud of the way guys stepped up".
Willis Booth pitched the first six innings and achieved his third win of the year, while recording five strikeouts.
Greensboro's four runs came on 10 hits with
Jimmy Short, Peters, and Efird leading the way with two hits apiece.
Edward Milian,
Ryan Campbell, and Efird drove in one run each.
