Softball Closes Triangle Classic With Two Victories

CARY, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team won two games to close out the 2017 Triangle Classic Sunday.
 
Greensboro topped Olivet College, 7-6, to start the day before defeating Washington College (Md.), 8-4.
 
"Overall this weekend we to improve and play both sides of the game," Head Coach Teresa Fister said. "I am proud of how the team handled diversity and stayed mentally tough."

Brittainy Rush led off the first inning with a walk before advancing to second base on a single by Melissa Garcia. Later in the inning after Rush and Garcia moved up 60-feet with a stolen base, Haley Rumley continued her hot start to the season with a two RBI double to right center field.
 
Later in the inning, Rumley stole third base before coming in to score on a Mandi Ballard single to right field.
 
Greensboro then extended their lead to 7-0 with a four-run fourth inning.
 
Madison Crisco led off the inning with a solo homerun to center field before her teammates turned three Olivet errors into three runs.
 
Olivet then scored six runs in the seventh inning before Maddy Wetherholt came in and recorded her first save of the season.
 
Garcia, Kaylee Johnson, and Rumley had a team-high two hits, while Ballard, Cirisco, and Kali Puckett had one hit each. Hayley Tickle was credited with the win after pitching the first five innings.

Greensboro used a three-run first inning to take a 3-1 lead into the second inning.
 
After Rush led off the inning with a groundball out, Garcia reached base safely with an infield single to the pitcher. Johnson then moved Garcia into scoring position before Rumley plated her with a single down the right field line.
 
Later in the inning, Tickle recorded a RBI with a single of her own before Cassie Collins came in to score the final run of the inning on a Crisco fielder's choice.
 
The Pride then extended their lead to five runs with a three-run second inning before Washington got a run back in the bottom half. Garcia, Rumley, and Collins each had one RBI in the inning.
 
With Greensboro holding on to a four-run lead, Rush singled home Crisco in the third inning before Rumley led off the fourth inning with her first homerun of the season to push the advantage to 8-2.
 
However, Washington was able to plate two runs in the seventh inning but Greensboro was able to hold on for the four-run victory.
 
Rush went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Pride, while Collins recorded two hits. Wetherholt picked up the complete game win after striking out seven batters.
 
The Pride softball team will return to action at 2 p.m. Wednesday when they take on Guilford College in a doubleheader. Both games will take place at Guilford. For more information on Greensboro College softball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
