GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team pounded out 21 hits as the defeated they Quakers of Guilford College Sunday in a rubber match of the three-game series, 17-6.
Guilford took a two-run lead in the first inning before the Pride bats came to life to score seven runs of their own to take a 7-2 lead.
With the bases loaded and two out,
Blake Glass smashed a grand slam over the right field wall to give Greensboro a two-run lead.
Braedon Jewett and
Hunter Curtis then drew consecutive walks before
Brandon Soden hit a double down the right field line to extend the Pride lead to 5-2.
Following the Soden single,
Tim Osborne laced a triple to right center field for his second hit of the inning to score Curtis and Soden.
After retiring the Quakers in the top of the second inning, Greensboro added three more runs to extend their advantage to eight runs.
Zach Neumeister singled to lead off the inning before advancing to second base on a
Michael Faul ground out before coming in to score on a
Jimmy Short RBI single to center field.
Later in the inning, Jewett and Short came around to score following a Guilford wild pitch and throwing error.
Josh Evans was then able to retire the Quakers in order in the third inning with a fly out and two groundouts to bring the Pride back to the plate.
Greensboro continued their momentum by adding another run in the inning. The Pride loaded the bases before Soden was called out at home on a Neumeister fielder's choice that move Osborne to third base. Faul the recorded his lone RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Osborne.
With the Pride leading 11-2, Guilford plated four runs in the fourth inning before Greensboro got two runs of their own to make the score 13-6.
Curtis singled with two out in the first inning before advancing to second base on a wild pitch before Soden tallied his third hit of the day to put two runners on base for Osborne. Osborne took full advantage of the opportunity as he plated Curtis and Soden with a double down the left field line.
Greensboro continued hitting the ball well as they went on to score two runs in the fifth and seventh innings to secure the 11-run victory.
"I was extremely happy with the way the guys came out today," Head Coach
Frank Maldonado said. "After giving up the two runs in the first inning, the offense did their job as Blake (Glass) was able to put us on top.
"I was also happy the guys continued to grind despite having the lead and played hard for a full nine innings. The start of our season has been good but we are sort of resetting our record as we enter conference play next weekend."
Osborne tied a Greensboro College program record with five hits in the game after going 5-for-6 including two extra-base hits and four RBIs. Glass finished with four hits and a game-high six RBIs. Soden, Curtis, and
Brady Dignan combined for seven hits. Starter
Josh Evans pitched the first four innings before giving way to
Tyler Garam who was credited with the win after pitching four no-hit innings.
Brayden King then pitched the ninth inning.
The Pride baseball team will return to action at 6 p.m. Friday when they open USA South Athletic Conference play with Game 1 of a three-game set against Huntingdon College. The series will be played at Ted Leonard Park. For more information on Greensboro College baseball, continue to follow
