Pride Softball Opens Triangle Classic With Two Game Split

CARY, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team opened the 2017 Triangle Classic with a two-game split Saturday.
 
The Pride defeated Wilson University to start the day, 6-1, before falling to the Captains of Christopher Newport University, 15-1.
 
"We were exited today to see all of our players contribute in vital ways," Head Coach Teresa Fister said. "We continue to learn how to play more as a team every single game."

The Phoenix and the Pride entered the third inning scoreless before Greensboro struck for three runs to take a 3-0 lead.
 
Brittainy Rush led off the inning with a walk before Melissa Garcia reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Rush to move into scoring position.  Kaylee Johnson then moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Following Johnson's bunt, Hayley Rumley laced a double into right-center field to give Greensboro their first two runs of the inning.
 
Later in the inning, Rumley came around to score on a Mandi Ballard single.
 
Greensboro then added to their lead with one run in the fifth inning before plating their final two runs in the sixth inning. Rumley and Cassie Collins each had one RBI during the two-run sixth inning.
 
Wilson then got one run in the seventh inning but Greensboro was able to retire the Phoenix before any more runs scored to secure the five-run victory.
 
Ballard finished with a team-high two hits, while Garcia, Rumley, and Kali Puckett had one hit each. Maddy Wetherholt was credited with the win after pitching the first five innings before giving way to Collins who gave up one-run in two innings pitched.

After a scoreless first three innings, Greensboro struck first with one run in the fourth inning. Garcia singled to left field to start the inning before coming into score on a Ballard single after reaching second base on a Captains error.
 
Christopher Newport then went on to score the game's final 15 runs to secure the victory.
 
Hayley Tickle, Garcia, Ballard, and Collins each recorded one hit in the loss. Tickle was credited with the loss in five innings pitched, while Brittany Nozet and Wetherholt combined to pitch one inning in relief.
