Baseball Splits Two-Game Set With Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Greensboro College baseball team closed out the weekend with a two-game split with the Hornets of Lynchburg College.
 
The Pride won Game 1, 8-3, before dropping Game 2, 6-4.
 
"Overall I was happy with our guys performance this weekend," Head Coach Frank Maldonado said. "We came out slow in Game 2 and was just not able to recover.
 
"There is a lot of baseball still to be played and we will get back at it next week as we prepare for our weekend series with Guilford."
 
Game 1
 
Greensboro quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first 1 ½ innings after plating one run in the first inning and three runs in the second inning.
 
Michael Faul scored Brady Dignan on an RBI groundout to get the scoring started.
 
Adam Murray then led off the second inning with a single before stealing second base to get into scoring position for Braedon Jewett who scored him with a RBI single to left field. Jewett then came in to score on a Brandon Soden sacrifice fly before Dignan recorded the final RBI of the inning with a sacrifice of his own.
 
After Greensboro established the four-run lead, Lynchburg got two runs of their own before Greensboro struck for two more runs in the third inning after Jewett and Murray each had RBI singles.
 
Each team scored one run in the sixth inning before the Pride sealed the five-run victory with another run in the seventh inning.
 
Christian Kercado singled to right field to lead off the inning before advancing into scoring position following a passed ball by the Hornets catcher. Greensboro then capitalized on the mistake as Edward Milian laced a single up the middle to record his lone RBI of the day.
 
Jewett finished with a game-high three hits, while Tim Osborne had two hits. Josh Evans recorded the win after pitching the first six innings before giving way to Andrew Ray.
 
Game 2
 
The Pride and the Hornets traded runs in the first inning before Lynchburg opened up a three-run lead with three runs in the fourth inning.
 
Greensboro then pulled to within 4-2 with one run in the fifth inning before the Hornets were able to extend their advantage with two runs in the home half. Faul, who recorded a RBI in the first inning, tallied his second RBI of the game as he plated Jacob Rodriguez with a single to right field.
 
The Pride tried to rally back in the ninth inning with two runs but came up short, falling by the two-run deficit.
 
Dignan and Kristopher Taveras led off the ninth inning with pinch-hit singles before Dillon Cox hit a pinch-hit single of his own to played Dignan from third base. With runners on the corner and nobody out, Osborne hit into a double play that allowed Taveras to come across the plate for the Pride's final run.
 
 
Zach Neumeister had a team-high three hits, while Derrick Jarr and Osborne had two hits each. Andrew Ray, Faul, Dignan, Cox, and Taveras each had one hit. Tyler Garam was credited with the loss for Greensboro, while Kyle Zicafoose and Cameron Whitson pitched the final 3 1/3 innings in relief.
 
The Pride baseball team will return to action at 4 p.m. Friday when the open a three-game weekend set with Guilford College. The first game of the three-game set will be played at New Bridge Bank Park in downtown Greensboro.
