GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Greensboro College women's basketball team was defeated in a USA South Athletic Conference battle by the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College Saturday, 62-59.

Monica Smalls sparked 6-2 run to open the game. Smalls' layup in the paint gave Greensboro (14-10, 9-4 USA South) a four-point lead with five minutes remaining in the first period. After the senior started the run,
Kamerin Williams and
Katie Lewis also banked in one layup each.
Â
However, the Bishops (12-12, 7-6 USA South) used a 5-0 run of their own to take a 7-6 lead in the second period. Â

North Carolina Wesleyan continued their run in the early portion of the second period to take a 16-10 lead with 6:53 showing on the clock.

The two teams then traded baskets for the remainder of the half as the Bishops took a 29-19 halftime lead.

The Bishops would stretch their lead to as many as 16 points in the third period before Greensboro pulled within 11 points heading into the final 10 minutes.

Despite outscoring Wesleyan 24-16 over the final ten minutes, Greensboro was not able to get any closer than three points, falling 62-59.

"A lot of players were out of position tonight and played in unfamiliar spots for us," Assistant Coach
Alexis Hite said. "Moving into tomorrow, we to need play together as a team and overcome adversity.

 "We need to start faster and convert on higher percentage shots, especially finishing around the basket when we get those opportunities."

Williams led the way for Greensboro with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Lewis and
Rasheika Gregory also finished in double figures with 11 points each. Lewis also corralled seven rebounds, tallied 2 steals, and dished out three assists.
Marla Crawford passed for a team-high six assists to go along with five points.
