GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team remained perfect in 2017 with a doubleheader sweep of Southern Virginia University Saturday.
The Pride took Game 1 by an 8-4 mark before winning Game 2, 12-1, to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 1998.
"Today was a quality team day," Assistant Coach
Chris Fenisey said. "We had another strong day from our pitching staff, while our defense also did a good job.
"We were able to get timely hits when we need them and that allowed us to come away with two victories in our home opener."
Game 1
Southern Virginia took an early one-run lead before Greensboro tied the game in the bottom half of the first inning.
Zach Neumeister led off the inning with an infield single before advancing into scoring position on a
Brandon Soden groundout. After moving up 90-feet on an
Andrew Ray groundout, Neumeister crossed the plate to tie the game after
Michael Faul recorded an infield single of his own.
After
Josh Evans shut down the Knights in the top half of the second, Greensboro struck for two more runs to take a 3-1 lead.
Braedon Jewett, who reached base on an infield single, scored the first run of the inning following a
Brady Dignan single before Neumeister plated
Hunter Curtis with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Greensboro then added another run in the third inning before adding three more run in the seventh inning to take a 7-1 lead.
The Pride added their final run of the game in the eighth inning after Neumeister crossed the plate once again after
Andrew Ray hit a single to left field.
However, the Knights were able to strike for three-runs in the ninth inning to pull within four runs but
Adam Murray got Riley Daniels to fly out to end the game.
Jewett recorded two of Greensboro's eight hits in the game, while Neumeister, Ray, Faul,
Scotty McGuire, Curtis, and Dignan had one hit each.
Evans recorded his first win of the season after pitching the first six innings, while Murray tossed the final three innings to record the save.
GAME 2
Greensboro wasted no time establishing a three-run lead as they pushed three runners across the plate in the first inning.
Tim Osborne led off the inning with his first double of the game before Soden and Neumeister walked to load the bases for
Kristopher Taveras. Taveras took full advantage of the opportunity as he roped a single to right field to score Soden and Osborne.
With runners on the corners, Greensboro perfectly executed a perfect double steal to score the final run of the inning.
After neither team scored for the next 1 ½ innings, the Pride added three more runs in the third inning.
Taveras led off with a double down the right field line before coming in to score on an
Adam Murray single. Later in the inning,
Hunter Curtis plated two runs with a single of his own.
The Knights then scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning before Greensboro scored six more runs over the final five innings to secure the win. Curtis accounted for three of the final six RBIs, while
Jimmy Short and Murray had one RBI each.
Greensboro tallied 14 hits in the game, while only giving up two hits. Taveras, Murray, and Curtis each had three hits, while
Edward Milian and Osborne had two hits each.
Piero Amador recorded his second win of the season after pitching six stellar innings of two-hit baseball before giving way to
Tyler Garam. Garam then followed Amador with three no-hit innings to tally his first save of the season, while striking out five batters.
The Pride baseball team will return to action at 12 p.m. Saturday when they host Roanoke College in a doubleheader. For more information on Greensboro College baseball, continue to follow
