GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite two rushing touchdowns by quarterback
Mac Graham, the Greensboro College football team fell to Newport News Apprentice Saturday, 42-22.
Apprentice (1-1) jumped out to a 21-0 lead before the Pride (0-2) got on the board.
Following a short Builders punt, the Pride capped a seven-play drive with Graham's first rushing touchdown of the game from 4 yards out. The point-after attempt was blocked, leaving Greensboro trailing 21-6.
The Pride then found themselves in another short field situation on their next possession, taking over on their own 48-yardline following another Apprentice punt.
Just when it appeared the drive was about to stall, Graham connected with
Greg Tyler for 36 yards, moving the ball to the Apprentice 3-yard line. Two plays later, Graham scampered into the end zone on a designed play-action run from one yard out, cutting the deficit to 21-12.
The Pride then completed a 2-point conversion to pull within seven at the break.
"I thought that our guys provided us with a big spark heading into halftime," Head Coach
Greg Crum said.
Apprentice extended its margin following intermission before Herb Bridges broke off a 67-yard kickoff return to put the Pride in Builders territory once again.
Greensboro did not let the outstanding field position go to waste, finding the end zone on a 20-yard touchdown pass to
Demario Smith from Graham. The Pride converted another two-point attempt, pulling within 35-22.
The Builders scored one final time, while running out the clock, to secure the victory.
"We played a very good Apprentice School team today," Crum said. "We have got to continue closing the gap and tighten things up.
"I was really excited to see our offense start clicking and putting points on the board. It was a close ball game, and the guys fought really hard."
Graham finished with 287 passing yards on 17 completions, including one touchdown and two interceptions.
Devon Newton,
Matt Romanowski, and Tavares Thomas Jr each hauled in three passes, combining for 147 yards.
Greg Tyler finished with two catches.
Trey Cronin paced the Greensboro defense with 12 tackles.
Trent Stanback recorded the Pride's lone sack. Stanback, Bridges,
Dashawn Chestnut, and
Jason Gerber combined for five tackles for loss.
The Pride football team will return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they welcome Gallaudet to the friendly confines of Jamieson Stadium. For more information on Greensboro College football, continue to follow
