GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team split a pair of USA South Athletic Conference games Friday against the Panthers of LaGrange College.
The Pride (15-11, 4-6 USA South) dropped Game 1, 6-4, before taking Game 2, 3-2.
LaGrange (11-10, 4-6 USA South) took a three-run lead early before Greensboro rallied back with three runs in the second inning to tie the game.
Sarah Tompkins scored the first Pride run after a throwing error by the Panthers' catcher. Following the Tompkins run,
Kali Puckett and
Allyson Yeager each had an RBI single.
After tying the game, Tompkins gave the Pride a 4-3 lead with a solo shot over the center-field fence.
However, LaGrange scored the final three runs to secure the 6-3 victory.
Puckett finished with a team-high three hits, while Tompkins recorded two. Brittany Rush and Yeager each had one hit.
Maddy Wetherholt (8-6) took the loss for Greensboro.
The Pride then took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of Game 2. Rush got the RBI train going with a single through the middle infield before scoring on a double by
Alexis Hall. Two batters later,
Madison Crisco recorded an RBI with a groundout to score
Sarah Connolly.
LaGrange then scored one run in the fourth and fifth innings to pull within one run.
The Panthers threated to tie the game in the seventh inning, but Crisco made an outstanding diving play in center field before doubling off Carolyn Harkness at second base to end the game.
Connolly, Hall, and Rush each recorded two hits, while Puckett, Yeager, and Tompkins each had one.
Dawn Harris (7-5), who recorded four strikeouts, picked up the win.
"We had some mental errors that hurt us in the first game," Interim Head Coach
Denzel Wallace said. "We have to do a better job with our situational hitting, but I am happy with the way we rebounded back to win the second game."
The Pride softball team will open another USA South Athletic Conference double-header at 1 p.m. Sunday when it welcomes the Hawks of Huntingdon College. For more information on Greensboro College softball, continue to follow
