DANVILLE, Va. – Despite a strong pitching performance by
Adam Murray, the Greensboro College baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game set to the Cougars of Averett Friday, 3-2.
The Pride (6-21, 2-8 USA South) got on the board first with a run in the fifth inning.
Brandon Soden singled to lead off the inning before advancing to third base after two ground-ball outs. Soden then crossed the plate on a Cougars wild pitch.
After the Cougars scored two runs in the sixth inning to take the lead, Greensboro tied the game in the seventh inning on an RBI single by
Braedon Jewett.
However, the Cougars scored the game's final run in the bottom half to secure the one-run victory.
"Adam (Murray) pitched an absolute gem for us today," Assistant Coach
Chris Fenisey said. "The game was a pitching battle, but unfortunately we were not able to get timely hits as Averett was able to capitalize on our mistakes."
The Pride recorded six hits. Soden recorded a team-high two hits, while Edward Mililian,
Griffen Riley,
Bram Johnson, and Jewett each had one hit. Murray, who did not factor into the decision, struck out seven Averett batters over six innings.
Edward Dorunda took the loss.
The Pride baseball team will return to the diamond at 12 p.m. Saturday when it returns to Danville, Va. for a double-header with the Cougars. For more information on Greensboro College baseball, continue to follow
