Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Surge Not Enough As Pride Men Fall At St. Mary's (Md.)

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Donavan Griffith scored a team-high 16 points but the Pride men's basketball team fell to the Seahawks of St. Mary's College (Md.) Sunday, 91-84.

The Seahawks (4-1) opened the game on an 18-4 run before the Pride (1-2) pulled within 20-16, following a 12-2 run. Darus Maddox got the run started with the first bucket of the game before Dominic Fumbanks hit from long range off an assist by Christopher Corbin. Joseph Gatling then capped off the spurt with an old-fashion three-point play.

"We just came out a little bit flat to open the game," Head Coach Bryan Galuski said. "After the first few minutes we tightened up our defense and were able to pull ourselves back into the game."

However, St. Mary's was able to extend its margin out to 49-33 at the half, despite six points by Lorenzo Marry.

The Seahawks then maintained its double-digit lead until Greensboro pulled to within 67-61, following an 8-0 run, with eight minutes left to play. Griffith accounted for five points during the run, while Maddox chipped in the remaining three points.

Greensboro continued to battle for the remainder of the game but could not get any closer, falling by the seven-point margin.

"We did not capitalize on enough opportunities tonight," Galuski added. "I am very proud of our guys as they never gave up. They showed a lot of heart and determination for the full forty minutes.

"It is never easy to win a college basketball game on the road, and we were not able to do that today."

Four other Pride players joined Griffith in double figures scoring. Maddox finished with 13 points, while Fumbanks and Gatling each had 12 points. Marry, who had a team-high 11 rebounds, finished with 10 points.

The Pride men will return to the friendly confines of Hanes Gymnasium at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they host the Maroons of Roanoke College. For more information on Greensboro College men's basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
