LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Lorenzo Marry recorded his first career double-double as the Greensboro College men's basketball team defeated the Scots of Covenant College Friday, 81-79.
"I want to echo what the entire coaching staff has said about Lorenzo," Head Coach
Bryan Galuski said. "We are all proud of Lorenzo as he has come a long way. He works really hard, does his job, and was a huge reason why we came out on top tonight."
The Pride (11-7, 5-2 USA South) came out of the gate slowly as the Scots (10-7, 5-2 USA South) took a 10-0 lead.
Covenant then maintained its double-digit lead until the Pride used a 12-0 run to tie the game at 32 just after the under-4-minute media timeout.
Parris Scales started that run with his fourth basket of the evening, after which Marry and
Joseph Gatling combined for the next 10 points.
Over the final three minutes of the half, the teams traded baskets before Covenant took a 40-39 lead into the intermission.
With a three-pointer by
Torrence Outing just over a minute into the second half, Greensboro established a 42-40 lead, its first lead of the contest.
With the game tied at 58 six minutes later, Greensboro established a 69-60 lead after a 11-2 run.
Hamilton Hawkins began it with his first points before
Christopher Corbin,
Donavan Griffith, and Scales each tallied buckets.
The Pride then established its largest lead of the game at 73-63 following a pair of Gatling free-throws, before winning by the two point margin.
"We are very fortunate to come away with the win tonight after starting out really slow," said Galuski. "Offensively we did a good job of sharing the basketball and running the floor. On the defensive side of the ball, we were able to make some big stops that resulted into positive offensive possessions. Overall, I was really proud of the way the guys battled back.
"One of the things that will go unnoticed tonight was the play of Hamilton (Hawkins) as he did a good job of containing one of the leading scorers in the conference in TJ Cox. With his performance tonight, Parris continues to establish himself as one of the best post players in the league. Now we have to use this momentum and prepare for our match-up with Maryville.
"Maryville is a very tough place to play, but I have confidence in our guys that they will be ready to play."
Marry finished with 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Scales finished with a team-high 18 points, while Gatling (13) and Griffith (12) also scored in double figures.
The Pride connected on 50 percent (28-56) of its shots from the field after shooting 54 percent in the second half.
