Men's Soccer Falls To #7 Christopher Newport, 2-1, In Double Overtime

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Greensboro College men's soccer team traveled to take on the seventh ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University on Saturday evening. The Pride got on the board first, but fell in double overtime by a 2-1 score.

Just nine minutes into play, Shaun Watt gave Greensboro a 1-0 lead after he was able to beat the Captains keeper to bottom left corner of the goal follow an assist from Craig Gage.

Over the rest of the half, the two teams played strong but the Pride was able to hold their margin heading into the intermission break.

Coming out of the half, Greensboro was able to withhold the pressure until Christopher Newport found the equalizer in the 83rd minute to send the game into the overtime period.

After a scoreless first overtime segment, the Captains were able to tally the decisive goal three minutes into the second overtime frame for a 2-1 victory.

Head Coach Tony Falvino said after the game, "The boys played well tonight and got off to an early start by capitalizing on a CNU miscue. Unfortunately, we were unable to hold them off and missed all of our chances to seal the game. All credit goes to CNU for a well-played game. We need to learn from this and get better as we prepare for Covenant next Friday."

Greensboro was outshot on the day by a 17-7 mark. Shaun Watt led the way with four shots while Carlos Barragan contributed the other three.

Despite taking the loss, Jamie Payamps had a solid game in goal for the Pride. In just over 103 minutes played, Payamps recorded seven saves.

With the loss the Pride falls to 2-4 overall on the season. Greensboro will return to action next Friday afternoon at Bryan Park as they open USA South Athletic Conference play against Covenant College. For the latest on Pride athletics, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
