GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College women's soccer team returned to the pitch on Tuesday night. The Pride traveled down Friendly Avenue to take on their rivals Guilford College. Greensboro got on the board in the first half of play and was able to hold on down the stretch for a, 2-1, win.
After an evenly played first forty-two minutes of play,
Samara Alba put Greensboro on top, 1-0, with her fourth goal of the season. Alba placed the shot in the bottom right corner of the net.
As the time ticked away in the half, the Pride kept the Quakers off the board to take a narrow 1-0 mark into the break.
The score would remain 1-0 until the 65
th minute of play. Following a Pride corner kick, Alba was able to cross the ball to the far side of the box to
Carleigh Roach. Roach then struck the ball just under the cross bar to extend the Pride advantage to 2-0.
Later in the half Guilford was able to break the shutout but it was not enough as the Pride held on for a 2-1 win.
Guilford held shot advantage in the contest, 15-12.
Melanie Raton led the way with four shots in the game while
Gabbriele Edinger,
Lauren Greeson, and
Samara Alba each contributed two shots.
Brittany Morrison (4-1) picked up the win in goal while recording six saves.
"I am extremely proud of the way our girls played tonight," Head Coach
Gus Mota stated following the game. "We were able to finish on a couple of occasions to come away with an exciting win for our program. Now we have to turn our attention to conference play this weekend."
