GREENSBORO, NC – Despite causing seven Bridgewater turnovers, the Greensboro College football team fell by a 38-21 mark on Saturday night at Jamieson Stadium.
In the first quarter of play, the Pride defense was on fire. After forcing the Eagles to punt the ball away on their first possession of the day, Greensboro then took the ball away from the Bridgewater offense on three consecutive possessions. In those three possessions,
Isaiah Milligan-Smith and
Micah McMaster each recovered a fumble while
Willie Marshall recorded his first pickoff of the day.
As the first quarter clock ticked down neither team was able to put points on the board sending the game into the second quarter scoreless.
In the second quarter of play, Bridgewater was able to score 17 unanswered points to take a 17 point lead into the break.
Coming out of the intermission period, Greensboro was able to strike quickly with a five play 65 yard drive that took just 1:33 off the clock. On the drive,
Mac Graham connected with his big receiver in Armani Williams from 54 yards to cut the deficit to 17-7 following a
Scott Gaston point after.
However, the Eagles were able to extend their 31-7 lead before Greensboro was able to strike again in the fourth quarter of play.
With just over seven minutes left to play in the game, Greensboro capped off a six play drive with a 48 yard strike to
Raymond Bridges to make the score 31-13 following a failed PAT. The Pride then tried their first on-side kick of the day but was not able to recover. However,
Micah McMaster was able to come up with his first interception of the season for the Pride just two plays later.
Later in the quarter trailing 38-13, Greensboro was able to find the end zone one final time on the night. The Pride got the ball back just over three minutes remaining and was able to march the ball down the field in twelve plays.
Markez Brown got the drive started with a five yard dive up the middles. The the Pride put the ball in the hands of their quarterback,
Mac Graham, who completed five of his next seven passes highlighted by a 28 yard strike to Tavares Thomas to give the Pride the ball first down and goal. Then just three plays later, Graham ran the ball in for the games final score.
"This was a very tough loss for us," Head Coach
Bill Young stated following the game. "We had our opportunities but just could not capitalize. The defense played well but we have to continue to get better as a team."
Cortez Vernon led the way for Greensboro on the ground after recording 64 yards on 19 carries.
Mac Graham finished the day with 266 yards through the air with
Raymond Bridges, Armani Williams, and Tavares Thomas each hauling in at least 70 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Chase Sams recorded a team high 13 tackles.
Trent Stanback and
Cory Walker each recorded two tackles for loss.
