Women Win USA South North Outright With 72-42 Victory Over Pacers

GREENSBORO, NC –The Greensboro College women's basketball team defeated William Peace University, 72-42, on Sunday afternoon to capture to USA South Athletic Conference Northern Division outright.

Prior to the start of the game the Pride honored five seniors: Alicia BurrSyerra TroutmanShanita Hampton,Vontreece Hayes, and Tiffani Stephens.

In the first half of play the two teams kept the game close until the Pride started to pull away following an 8-8 tie.

Following a three pointer to tie the game by the Pacers, Greensboro was then used a 15-3 run over the next seven minutes of play to establish a 23-11 lead with 7:38 to play in the opening frame. Senior Tiffani Stephens was able to score the first four points of the run before Shanita HamptonAzha McNeil, and Joslyn Spires each recorded a basket to cap off the run.

Greensboro was then able to extend their lead to 35-18 heading into the intermission period.

Just five minutes into the second half of play, The Pride was able to extend their margin out to twenty points at 43-23 following a layup by Vontreece Hayes.

With the game securely in hand later in the half, Laycee Baughman drained a three-pointer  to give Greensboro a 65-37 lead with 3:15 to play in the game. Over the course of the final three minutes of play, Domonique McCoy and Jane Gill-Woods each recorded two points to help secure the 72-42 victory.

"I am extremely proud of the way that our team performed tonight following a long season," Pride Head Coach Randy Tuggle said following the win. "I am also very excited for our senior class as they finished their final season with us as USA South Athletic Conference Northern Division Champions and I am looking forward to the conference tournament next week."

For the game, Stephens led Greensboro in points with 14 followed by Troutman with 10. Stephens also led the team in rebounds, grabbing 11.

With the win, Greensboro College finishes the regular season with a 21-4 overall mark while going 16-3 in USA South Athletic Conference play. The Northern Division Champions will now wait to see who they will face in the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament. The tournament will get underway this coming Thursday, February 26 on the campus Maryville College.
