GREENSBORO, NC- The Greensboro College women's basketball team defeated Averett University, 60-55, on Wednesday evening.
The game tonight was the team's annual Play 4Kay game in honor of Kay Yow, the former N.C. State University women's basketball head coach. The women played to raise awareness for breast cancer research.
The Pride did not get on the board until the 15:43 mark from Kamerin Williams' jumper.  Two minutes laterMarla Crawford sank a three pointer to make the score 7-5 in favor of Averett. Alicia Burr tied the game at seven with a jumper with eight minutes left in the first half.
With 6:22 left in the first half, Shanita Hampton tied the game at 15 with a jump shot but Averett answered and took back the lead with two foul shots made by Aundrea Burns. The Pride had a short 22-19 lead with only four minutes left. The Cougars answered back and scored 11 points in the last four minutes of the first half.
Leaving the first half, Greensboro were down 30-29. The Pride shot 30.8% from the field and 57.1% from the free throw line.  Joslyn Spires led the team in points with six and Crawford was behind her with five. Tiffani Stephens made two blocks, grabbed three rebounds and made four points. Spires also made two steals and caught two rebounds.
In the second half of play, Averett controlled most of the game offensively until the 7:49 mark where The Pride took the game back (48-50). At the 7:49 mark, Tiffani Stephens took a layup to the hoop from the assist of Hampton. Â
With five minutes left, The Pride and the Cougars were back-and-forth with shots. Hampton set the pace for the rest of the game by making a lay-up for a 54-51 lead. Just moments after her layup, Hampton forced a turnover to give The Pride the ball back.
Averett lessened The Pride's lead with a layup made by Chandler Samm with just 3:15 left in the game. With 2:48 left in the game Syerra Troutman found the basket from the hands of Spires to make it a 56-54 game.
Greensboro captured the win with a score of 60-55. For the game, Stephens led the way with 13 points. Spires, Troutman, and Hampton all scored nine points apiece. Troutman grabbed 13 rebounds and Vontreece Hayes grabbed 11.
The Pride host Meredith College on Friday, February 20 for a 7 p.m. start time.
